Stepping Outside The Adjustment Bureau

Most people live life on the path we set for them, too afraid to explore any other. But once in a while, people like you come along that knock down all the obstacles we put in your way- people that realize free will is a gift that you'll never know how to use until you fight for it.

The Adjustment Bureau. Free Will. Determinism. Who is really writing our story? Who controls us? Who is making choices in our lives? Do we really have a choice? These thoughts in an everyday sense are like our breath, we do not think about them until someone makes us aware or begins to make us question. The Adjustment Bureau was that disruption to my thoughts, making me truly think about why I do what I do and if I am living a life based on free will or determinism. David Norris evidently displaying Free Will throughout this movie makes me really think about times in life when against all odds you will fight for what you want. It sometimes feels as if everything is working against us and sometimes we say that God must have another plan for us and sometimes I believe we have to be the David Norris’s and fight against all odds, using the free will that we have been given.

Being in college, these four years feel like years of never ending decisions. Decisions with friendship, decisions with organizations, decisions in leadership positions, decisions on the future, decisions in relationships, etc. Being in a phase of life where the future can sometimes feel more prominent then the present, this idea really has resonated with me. While I do everything to serve a greater God and fulfill a greater purpose, there are often times where against all odds I feel the desire to fight for something or to pursue a dream that may seem crazy. These feelings and these decisions are the ones that I truly believe will change me and challenge me to be the greatest version of myself and in that I will be fulfilling the purpose that Christ has laid out for me.

The Adjustment Bureau to me displays all the things and people in life that make us believe we need to stay on the straight line path- that deviation from this line is wrong. This way of life appears boring to me and safe. Had Norris allowed The Adjustment Bureau to rule his life and his decisions, he would never have allowed himself the ultimate happiness of being with the love of his life, Elise Sellas. He would have been unhappy and always wondering, what if? The Adjustment Bureau challenges me to tap into free will and consider a life off the path laid out by society. A life full of adventure and challenge and risk- a life that I truly believe God longs for us. The Adjustment Bureau is the box and we need to step outside of it to live and fulfill our greater purpose and to express our free will.
